Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi creates mosque from powdered sugar

ABU DHABI – Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi created a mosque for the Sofra bld Grand Iftar dessert area made entirely out of sugar.  The sculpture weighs in at 91.7 kilograms and took six days to build by a team from across the hotel.  Engineering and pastry teams worked together to bring a backlit masterpiece to the restaurant.

The culinary team at Shangri-La hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi dreamt of building a sculpture of this type for Ramadan and, each year, it grows in scale and size.  This year, there are two creations on either end of the famous dessert station, with three chocolate-flavored fountains.  The ingredients for this iconic display included 70 kilograms of sugar, 14 kilograms of corn flour and 770 grams of gelatine.  To light up the edifice, 10 meters of LED lights were installed with five VLED drivers.

“Ramadan kareem to all and we look forward to seeing you at iftar, where you can see this magnificent work of art,” said General Manager Thomas Guss.

Guests visiting Sofra bld’s Grand Iftar are invited to take photos and share them on the social media platforms of their choice with #shangrilaabudhabi.
