Corinthia Hotel London launches “Sumptuous Sleep Retreat” and combines 5-star luxury with medical, physical and nutritional expertise

Corinthia Hotel London has unveiled a “Sumptuous Sleep Retreat” which launches on May 13, 2014.   Developed in partnership with medically-trained experts, this is a response to research and guest feedback indicating that a great night’s sleep is becoming the ultimate luxury.

Corinthia is to embrace and educate guests on the concept of quality sleep and has combined its own luxurious facilities with the latest advice from leading UK Physiologist and sleep expert Dr. Guy Meadows who uses “mindfulness technique,” and UK Nutritionist Jeannette Hyde who has designed a Sleep Menu, along with hotel chef Garry Hollihead, based on a Functional Medicine approach.  The experts are also available for one-to-one consultations by appointment.

The Sumptuous Sleep Retreat includes:

•         Accommodation in one of the luxurious bedrooms or suites

•         A light lunch from the Sleep Menu in the Spa Lounge at ESPA Life at Corinthia

•         A 120-minute Sleep Ritual at ESPA Life at Corinthia

•         Dinner from the Sleep Menu in The Northall restaurant at the hotel

•         Time to unwind in one of the hotels famous Sleep Pods at ESPA Life at Corinthia

•         A turndown treat of valerian tea or warm milk and pumpkin seed cookies

•         A light breakfast from the Sleep Menu served in the guest’s room

•         A choice of a personalized Osteopathy consultation, personalized Acupuncture session or Ancient Indian Shirodhara treatment at ESPA Life at Corinthia

•         (Plus one-to-one sessions with Dr. Guy Meadows and/or Jeannette Hyde available at an additional consultation fee)

Matthew Dixon, Corinthia London General Manager, said: “We are in the business of selling sleep and this project highlights all the reasons to choose Corinthia Hotel London to wind down, relax, and get a quality night’s rest. After all if we sleep well, we perform well the following day, and many guests are here on demanding business trips or for a weekend of leisure where they want to feel on top form.”

Greater detail on the sleep offering:

The Sleep Spa:

A “Sleep Ritual” will be available at ESPA Life at Corinthia.  A cleansing foot ritual is followed by treatments such as polarity balance bodywork to counter the negative effects of using mobile phones and computers, or Shirodhara, the Ayurvedic pouring of oil on the forehead. Sleep Acupuncture, Osteopathy, and soothing Balinese massages with hot stones are also on offer.  And the hotel has six male and six female Sleep Pods in which guests can sleep before or after treatments.

The Sleep Expert:

UK based Physiologist Dr. Guy Meadows of The Sleep School, and author of “The Sleep Book: How to Sleep Well Every Night,” will offer guests one-to-one sleep coaching consultations by appointment. His approach is based on mindfulness techniques and use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).  Dr. Guy Meadow’s top tips for good sleep will be distributed in the hotel and can be found here: http://www.corinthia.com/hotels/london/the-power-of-sleep/the-sleep-expert/?id=5432 and here: http://www.corinthia.com/hotels/london/the-power-of-sleep/sleep-tips/?id=5905

The Sleep Menu:

A menu of wind-down food and drinks, designed by UK-based Nutritional Therapist Jeannette Hyde in conjunction with Executive Chef Garry Hollihead, will be placed in the bedrooms, The Northall Bar, The Lobby Lounge, and ESPA Life at Corinthia.

The menu is based on five principles:

1) Balancing blood sugar levels, for example, by including protein with each meal, especially breakfast.  This helps avoid cravings for stimulants which may be unhelpful to relaxation.

2) Including foods rich in proteins containing amino acid tryptophan in the last meal of the day. Tryptophan is used to make sleep hormone melatonin.

3) Combining tryptophan-rich foods with sugar or refined carbohydrates, as these speed up absorption of tryptophan.

4) Including magnesium-rich foods, to relax muscles and mind.

5) Including omega-3 essential fatty acids – contained in foods such as salmon, haddock, eggs, pumpkin seeds, walnut oil – for brain health.

Complimentary pumpkin seed cookies and warm milk will be available at bedtime.  Pumpkin seeds are rich in the amino acid tryptophan which when combined with the lactose sugar in the milk may help production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

The Sleep Rooms:

Corinthia London’s bedrooms are designed to encourage sleep. Normal life and worries are hopefully left behind as guests are cocooned in the highest-quality materials and props needed for good rest, including: the best mattresses in the business by Hypnos, blackout curtains, sound proof walls, goose down duvets or optional polyester depending on preference/allergies by Muhldorfer, 300-thread-count 100 per cent cotton linen Pratesi Line linen from Rivolta, and special pillows made by Muhldorfer ranging from goose down to polyester (firm to soft), with a wide choice depending on preference/allergies.

The Sleep Films:

The sleep retreat will officially launch on the May 13, 2014 after a party première of two eight-minute films about ‘The Power of Sleep’ by new film-directing talents Zawe Ashton and David Petch.  The two directors made their films during a residency in the hotel in March/April 2014. They were mentored by the great British film Director, Mike Figgis. The films are part of the hotel’s annual “Artist in Residence 2014” program.
