Bigger. Sleeker. Grander. Smarter. That's the best way to describe the Sky View Observatory, located on the 73rd floor of the Columbia Center. Recently redesigned and officially reopened to the public starting on July 1st, SVO offers an affordable and unsurpassed platform for viewing Seattle and the scenic Puget Sound region.
Previously, the location only offered a 270 degree view of the Seattle area. Now, the completely redesigned space offers a 360 degree view, a sleek understated interior and floor to ceiling displays telling the story of the city and the region. Lynda Collie, the General Manager of Columbia Center says, "We knew we had an incredible destination up here on the 73rd floor and we wanted to share it with Seattleites and visitors in an effective and unique fashion. Of course, the view is amazing, but our sleek decor and informative signage expands the visitor experience considerably, adding value and meaning to everyone's visit."
Strategically positioned at each vantage point, floor to ceiling displays, which were designed by Caroline Scull of Effective Design Studio, highlight the many unique features of the Emerald City and surrounding region. A circular historical table with a model of Columbia Center and a timeline of the building's construction acts as a starting point upon entrance. Stylized maps, such as "Great Heights: Olympic Peaks and Elevations" and "Islands and Inlets" immediately help visitors pinpoint and decipher key destinations such as mountains, rivers, and waterways. The "Seattle Icons" signage calls out unique historical information and key buildings. Complimentary binoculars are available for use and locally made treats such as Jones Soda, Tim's Cascade potato chips, Fran's chocolates, Beecher's cheese, and Cougar Mountain Cookies are for sale. Coffee drinks and light offerings, such as pastries in the morning and cookies in the afternoon, are sold as well.
The SVO is currently open every day from 10 am to 8 pm. Admission is free for children under the age of five, $9 for seniors, military and children (ages 5 to 12) and $12.50 for adults. Visitors can access the SVO through the elevators in the main lobby of Columbia Center. The building was designed by architect Chester Lindsey and is currently managed by CAC Real Estate Management Co., Inc. and owned by an affiliate of Beacon Capital Partners. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Seattle, the SVO is a perfect launching pad for exploring the Emerald City and surrounding region.
