1st Commonwealth Conference on Sport Tourism 2008 13 – 15 May 2008eTN The Commonwealth Tourism Centre with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia, Sabah Tourism Board, Bournemouth University, UK, and Creative Advances Technology Sdn Bhd is organising the “1st Commonwealth Conference on Sport Tourism” with its overall theme “Sport Tourism and Sustainability: Inter-relationships, Impacts and Issues” from 13-15 May 2008 at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.The main aim of this conference is to provide a platform for discussions in order to identify and to create new approaches to sport tourism development, investment and sharing of best practices in planning and management, bidding process, sourcing of private sponsorship and post-event management. The Conference also aims to enhance the quality of the industrial and academic segments of sports tourism, provide a means for capacity building, and to encourage further international conferences related to sports tourism. Through the di! scussion of current sport tourism issues, its economic benefits and challenges, it is hoped that the participants of this conference will gain enormous benefit, especially in the light of up-coming events such as the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, 2010, the Commonwealth Games in India, 2010 and the Olympic Games in London, 2012. This Conference bring together sports and tourism professionals from all over the world, Commonwealth countries in particular, to share their experiences, exchange ideas and discuss ways to enhance sustainable sport tourism development. 450 participants are expected to attend this two and a half day conference. A micro site, www.commonwealthtourism.com/sporttourism, was created to promote the conference and facilitate registration. Participants can register and pay online for the conference. A selection of conference packages offer conference participants a choice of hotel accommodation ranging from 5-star resorts to 3-star properties. This confer! ence will be held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, which is two and ha! lf hours away by flight from Kuala lumpur. Sabah has been chosen as the venue because of its numerous natural tourist attractions such as Mount Kinabalu, marine parks, Orang Utan Sanctuary, rivers and rapids, golf course and scuba diving spots.
