Russia has been elected as a member of the Executive Council at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for 2007-2011, Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Tourism Agency Natela Shengeliya told Interfax on Tuesday.

"The UNWTO General Assembly currently taking place in Columbia hosted a session of the European Commission, at which countries were elected by a secret ballot to the Executive Council for the next four years," Shengeliya said.

"There were eight contenders for four vacant seats. The majority of votes - 25 for each - were cast for Russia and Italy. France received 19 votes and Kazakhstan 16. Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia have not been elected to the Executive Council," Shengeliya said.

These figures show high confidence in Russia is on the part of the European professional tourism community, as well as its already existing prestige on the international arena, Shengeliya said.
