Norwegian Cruise Line's 1,966-passenger Norwegian Spirit was to make its inaugural cruise from the New Orleans on Sunday.
The Norwegian Spirit succeeds Norwegian Sun, which sailed from New Orleans last season. The 880-foot cruise ship sails seven-day Western Caribbean itineraries.
Norwegian was the first home-ported cruise line to return to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina when the Norwegian Sun began sailing seven-day cruises Oct. 15, 2006.
An economic impact study conducted in 2005, found the cruise industry contributes $226 million annually to the regional economy and supports more than 2,800 jobs. The Norwegian Spirit joins the 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy, which sails four- and five-day Western Caribbean cruises year-round from the Port of New Orleans.
