Sydney is no-go for no-frills Tiger

theage.com.au

TIGER Airways has added Canberra, Hobart and Newcastle to its routes as it prepares to start domestic services next month. But the airline may snub Sydney as a destination, with Tiger chief executive Tony Davis admitting the harbour city may not fit the airline's low-cost model.

While he stopped short of saying that Sydney would be left off the list of routes, he conceded that Newcastle — Tiger's first destination in NSW — was a better fit for the airline.

If Tiger does overlook the high-demand Melbourne-to-Sydney route, it would be the first low-cost carrier to do so in Australia's aviation history.

"We've got to look at our model and make sure that the model will continue to grow and prosper, and at the moment we think Newcastle is a better opportunity for us than Sydney," Mr Davis said.

"Sydney Airport is a major airport … (but) it isn't ideal for our operation and there are many other airports around the country … that (are) much better suited to our type of model."

His comments came as Tiger launched $9.95 introductory fares to Canberra, Hobart and Newcastle.

As the airline price war prepares to begin in earnest, Jetstar will today reveal a new web check-in service across its domestic operations. Qantas' budget offshoot will also unveil 10 self-service kiosks at Melbourne Airport today.
