Nigeria: 'How Nigeria Can Make Money From Tourism'

Until Nigeria identifies its tourism investment opportunities and lay foun-dation for their sustainability, investor will continue to shy away from investing in the sector.


The Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Otunba Runsewe disclosed this at the first Nigeria Tourism Investment stakeholders' forum held in Abuja.


According to Rusewe prospective investors needed to be encouraged before they would think of investing in the sector.

He listed incentives like friendly programmes, understanding marketing mix, promotional advantages and sustainability of investment value as some of the areas that needed attention.

"We most as a people understand the importance of tourism to economy before we can attract foreign investment into the sector.

He said tourism industry has a lot of economic prospects viable for investment adding that the federal government developed the Tourism Master Plan to diversify the economy from a mono-cultural system.

In his presentation, Ofobuike Igwebuez, stakeholder called for effective legislation in creating a conducive and competitive standard in the sector.

He said tourism sector is by no means an exception given the fact that it is the world's largest and most diverse industry.

"Given the large number and diverse nature of tourist attractions and destinations in the world today, Nigeria needs to upgrade ad consolidate its tourism industry to withstand the international competitive onslaught.

Competition in tourism enhances efficiency; increase accessibility and provision of quality tourism products and services," Ibwebueze said.

The forum was organized to help in transforming the sector to be a forefront contributor to the Nigerian economy.
