Brazilian budget airline introduces weekly direct flight to Senegalafricasia.com A Brazilian privately owned budget airline BRA is next month to launch a direct flight between Brazil and Senegal, the first between the two countries, a diplomat said Wednesday.Brazilian Ambassador Katia Godinho Gilaberte said starting November 8, there will be a weekly direct flight every Thursday between Dakar and Recife, a northeastern Brazilian city. A second weekly flight is in the pipeline in coming months. The introduction of the flight was in response to a need raised by the Senegal's President Abdoulaye Wade and Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to enhance economic and cultural "south-south exchanges". Eduardo Malheiros, airline general manager forecast to carry around 20,000 passengers per year on the route. It is the fourth airline connecting Brazil and the African continent, but the first by a Brazilian company, Malheiros said. To date the only direct flights from Africa to Brazil operate from the Angolan capital Luanda, Cape Verde's Praia, and Johannesburg in South Africa. |
