Mozambique: Tourism Operators Create Federation

allafrica.com

Mozambican tourism companies plan to establish, as from early 2008, a Hotels and Tourism Federation that will defend the interests of its members and promote the expansion of tourism activities.

A source in the Tourism Ministry told AIM that this decision was taken during a meeting of business people representing hotels and tourism associations from the northern, central and southern regions of the country, held in the northern city of Pemba recently.

'The participants think that the creation of such a federation is important because it will represent at national level the interests of the private sector in the Hotels and Tourism area', said the source.

To this end, the meeting set up an installation commission of six business people from the three regions, who are to collect the various views of the provincial associations and deliver, within 90 days, a proposal for the statutes of the future federation.

The meeting also approved a code of conduct to regulate the activities of both national and foreign companies and tourism operators in Mozambique.

Quessanias Matsombe, who represents the southern region's associations, was elected chairperson of the installation commission.

The meeting was also attended by Tourism Minister Fernando Sumbana, and by representatives of the trade unions who represent hotel and tourism workers.
