United is latest airline to boost faresseattletimes.nwsource.com United Airlines, the world's second-largest carrier, boosted round-trip airfares today by $6 for domestic flights.United joins Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines who last week similarly boosted fares. United said the increase is in response to the cost of jet fuel; it has jumped 16 percent in price since Aug. 6. "They do need to offset rising oil prices, and they will continue to try to raise fares," said Jim Corridore, an analyst with Standard & Poor's in New York. However, it's unclear if United's fare increase would trigger matching rises by rival airlines. At least one, Continental Airlines, said it has not matched the increase. Airlines have had a hard time making fare increases stick this year, often rescinding them after competitors balk at matching them. |
