Rowdy British tourists have become an increasing problem for Greek authorities in recent years at resorts on the islands of Rhodes, Crete and Corfu.
A British tourist has been convicted of biting a police officer during a brawl on the holiday island of Rhodes and sentenced to more than a year in prison, authorities said Wednesday.
The 21-year-old man, identified by police as Warren Christopher Manners, was convicted Tuesday and sentenced to 14 months in prison on assault charges, but was released from custody after filing an appeal, police and judicial authorities said.
Information on the man's home town was not available.
No date was set for a hearing on the appeal, and he was freed without conditions, meaning he did not have to surrender his passport.
The incident occurred late Monday at the island's seaside resort of Faliraki. Police said the man bit an officer on the thigh and tore his shirt while trying to evade arrest after police intervened to break up a fight outside a bar.
Last month, the mayor and local residents at the Cretan resort of Malia blocked a highway on the island to protest behavior by drunken tourists at the resort.
