Dollar blow to US tourists

THE weak United States dollar appears to be keeping American visitors away from the UK while encouraging more Britons to take transatlantic trips, official tourism figures revealed yesterday.
The number of visits to the UK made by North American travellers fell by 7 per cent to 1.47 million in the first five months of 2007, the Office for National Statistics said.
In contrast, UK residents, enjoying an exchange rate of $2 to the pound, made 1.76 million trips to North America in the first five months of this year - 2 per cent up on the 2006 figure.
The report came as the pound charged to a new 26-year high yesterday against the dollar.
