African airline to buy 6 737s

chicagotribune.com

Comair Ltd., British Airways' franchise operator in South Africa, plans to buy six Boeing Co. 737 aircraft by the end of the year for $76 million to accommodate more passengers.

The new 162-seat planes will allow Comair's low-cost division to reduce its cost per seat by 8 percent, the Johannesburg-based company said Tuesday. South Africa's fastest economic expansion in more than two decades is spurring air travel demand, and the country also expects a surge in tourists leading up to 2010, when it becomes the first African nation to host soccer's World Cup. British Airways, Europe's third-largest airline, owns about 13 percent of Comair.
